Why Olive Oil Is So Good For Your Skin

Do you suffer with super dry, tight, mature or sensitive skin?

There’s something that can help – Olive Oil!

Olive oil has been used for centuries to moisturise skin, long before complicated skincare routines came into play and well before endless bottles & jars filled our bathroom shelves and dressing tables.

Olive oil can be used to gently cleanse, soften and protect the skin.  My Coconut & Olive Hot Cloth Cleanser is testament to this!

It’s naturally rich in nourishing fatty acids and antioxidants, which help to support the skins natural moisture barrier.

When you make soap with olive oil it creates a creamy, skin conditioning lather that cleanses without leaving your skin feeling stripped or uncomfortable.

So whether you’re looking for something calming and non drying for sensitive or mature skin, or you just want a more natural, plastic-free approach to everyday washing, olive oil based products are a great place to start.  Fortunately, the majority of my soaps are made with organic olive oil. Here are three simple ways that olive oil works in harmony with your skin.

1. Deeply moisturises without heaviness

Olive oil is naturally rich in fatty acids which help soften and protect the skins natural moisture barrier. Instead of sitting heavily on the surface of your skin it sinks in beautifully, helping your skin hold onto moisture and leaving it feeling comfortable and nourished.

If your skin often feels tight after washing, switching to olive oil based soaps can make a noticeable difference.  Olive oil has been used in traditional soap making for centuries because it creates mild, conditioning bars which cleanse gently.  This is why classic Castile-style soaps are known for being kind to the skin.

2. Gentle and soothing for sensitive skin

One of the loveliest things about olive oil is how calming it can feel on yout skin. When you use olive oil based creams and lotions your skin feels protected and nourished without feeling claggy and sticky.

Look out very soon because I’m launching a wonderful olive oil based lotion!

Many people also love olive-oil-rich blends like Survival Soap, where olive oil helps moisturise while other ingredients add cleansing and lather.

3. Supports a healthier skin barrier

Olive oil contains a high proportion of oleic acid, which is a really skin nourishing essential fatty acid.  It protects skins moisture barrier which helps to keep moisture in and environmental stress out.

So you can see why it remains one of my favourite ingredients in traditional soapmaking and skincare.
