Well hello and good day to you! (sorry, been watching Miranda)!
In this weeks blog I wanted to tell you a bit more about the outlets I sell the soap in and to let you know of two brand new ones that I’ve gained this last week or so!
The original place I sold the soap in was the Maeldune Heritage Centre which is right at the top of Market Hill in Maldon. It was here that I originally sold my handmade cards and painted glassware when I first started my craft business back in 2000. In 2012 I began managing the centre and did that on a part time basis while I dabbled with soap making. Being a craft centre selling handmade local crafts they were keen to have handmade soaps on sale so I was in the right place at the right time, so to speak. Once I had my safety assessments done it was the perfect place to sell them as I was literally on hand to help customers who wanted to buy the soaps. I’ve continued to sell the soaps there even tho I no longer manage the centre as it’s still one of their best selling items and I have lots of regular customers who shop there.
Whilst selling in the Maeldune Centre I was asked to sell a few soaps in a shop nearby. Magpie of Maldon started out selling in a small shepherds hut in a quirky little street called Brights Path which is just off Maldon High Street. Magpie soon did so well that it moved to its own brand new shop in Brights Path. It’s a lovely shop which, as well as selling my soaps, sells some gorgeous accessories; ladies clothing, scarves, gloves, handbags, purses and much more. It’s well worth a look!.
For a couple of years I sold my goats milk soaps, creams and skincare in The Crafty Goat at Abberton, near Mersea, which is the place where I buy the raw, unpasteurised, local goats milk. It has recently closed for a winter refurbishment so, hopefully, I will continue to sell the soaps in there when they reopen.
This time last year I was approached by Tiptree Jam (Wilkin & Sons) to sell the soap in their gift shop. This is an incredible outlet as they recieve thousands of visitors every year to their famous Jam Factory and tea rooms. Tiptree jam is sold all over the world and it’s a real household name so it is a privilege to be associated with them and to sell the soaps, creams and skincare in their shop.
In the lovely little seaside town of Brightlingsea is a little shop called ‘Just Around The Corner’ and in there is some stunning jewellery made by the owner as well as other local crafts, as they also sell my soaps and skincare. Although it’s quite a way away I manage to keep it topped up by exchanging stock with the owner as we both attend Coggeshall Farmers Market.
Wickham Bishops is another lovely little village and the Health Food shop there is the hub of the village. I have been selling the soap in there for several months and it seems to be going very well! I concentrate on selling the local ingredient products and more ‘therapeutic’ products which are in line with the other health food products sold there. The soaps and skincare have been really well received there and I’m really pleased to be in such a popular shop!
My latest outlet is in Colchester. I’ve been asked plenty of times if I have any outlets in Colchester and now I’m happy to say I have! Last week I set up in Pine Valley Interiors which is a fabulous pine workshop and showroom. The soap is by the main desk so it will be seen by plenty of customers and visitors to the shop. They have some exciting plans for the near future so it’s lovely to be in there at the outset and to be a part of that!
I have a couple of other outlets that are gift based and online: Hewson & Nash http://hewsonnash.bigcartel.com/category/maldon-soap-company
And also a local company called ‘The Beard And The Wonderful’ which sells beard oils and other male grooming stuff. https://thebeardandthewonderful.com/
I sell a couple of male orientated soaps in their online shop and also in the shop that they have. Funnily enough they have one of the shepherds huts in Brights Path in Maldon where Magpie started out. I wonder where they’ll end up?
Next week will be all about Christmas!!!
Lots of Love
